Secularism in Syria while Removing Assad
لزوم حمایت از سکولاریسم در سوریه، همزمان با برکناری بشار اسد
As noted five years ago (1), pro democracy groups must condemn Syria's Assad for his heinous crimes against the Syrian people; and also, Islamic Republic of Iran's support of Assad's regime, and its intervention in Syria should be rejected, and Iran must be required to bring back its military personnel to Iran.
But Syrian and Iranian opposition and the West need to make sure to support secularism in Syria while rejecting Assad's regime. Once 38 years ago, Iranian Revolution did not distinguish its rejection of dictatorship from supporting the secularism that existed in Iran of that era and we are still suffering from the loss of secularism in Iran in 1979. The experience of Iran's revolution of 1979 can be a good lesson for Syria (2).
It is understandable that Islamist forces want to
use the uprising against Bashar Assad's dictatorship, as an
opportunity to end secularism in Syria, and to replace it with an Islamic state, but
the secular and democratic forces must resist such schemes for Syria's future.
Hoping for a democratic and secular futurist republic in Iran,
