of Belonging to Iran and the US
چالشهای تعلق به ایران و آمریکا
Reports from Tehran airport say that Iranian-American dual citizens who have entered Iran were asked if they prefer Iran to the US and when they answered Iran, they were asked to surrender their US passport and IRI officials at the airport shredded the US passport of the traveler visiting family in Iran. It is said that this measure of Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) is in reaction to the US three-month ban on Iranian travelers visiting the US. The US says the measure relates to IRI's involvement in terrorism (1).
The relations of Iranian government and the US have been a subject of discussion for decades (2) but here the question is about the Iranian-American dual citizens and their rights regardless of relations between the two countries. We are living in the 21st century and as humans we are entitled to what is clearly stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of 1948 and regardless of state relations and even if there is a war between the two countries, both governments of Iran and the US have the obligation to observe the rights of all people chiseled in the UDHR document (3).
The recent events are currently being extensively
discussed openly in various Iranian opposition networks abroad. Dr. Esmail
Nooriala who voted for Donald Trump in the recent US presidential election
(4) is among the
ones who have discussed this topic following Donald Trump's recent executive
order. Dr. Esmail Nooriala's interview with an Iranian diaspora TV program
in the US is linked below (5).
