About 16 years ago, I wrote an essay in Persian entitled 'Why Secularism Will Determine the Future of Iran," and explained why contrary to the experience of Eastern Europe, just focusing on 'human rights' in Iran is not enough to achieve freedom, and paying attention to secularism has a key role for success! For years, many Iranian human rights activists have acknowledged the value of secular democracy to achieve human rights in Iran and elsewhere in the world, surely not because of my essay but because of what we have experienced during the last 45 years. In two months, on Sept 10th, is the anniversary of Secular Democracy Day when we celebrate the birthday of Iranian martyr Pooya Bakhtiari. I wish human rights organizations such as Amnesty would also consider recognizing this day!
