For years I have
avoided to discuss the Palestinian issue because it is best to be
handled by Palestinians and Israel themselves, nonetheless, have
expressed my opinion that Israel is the most democratic country in
the Middle East although Palestinians do not have equal rights in
that country, just as United States was a real democracy for two
centuries but the blacks did not have equal rights and the best
solution for blacks in America was to work for their rights within
US democracy and they did and succeeded. I know most Palestinians
have chosen a two-state solution and it is none of my business to
decide for Palestine or Israel,
I expressed my opinion about Palestinians and Israel once, and
avoided to get into day-to-day discussions on the topic in the last
40 years. As far as the Palestinian political and human
rights activists are concerned, I believe they need to focus on
secular democracy rather than human rights, and this is true for
strategy of civil society and political activists all over the Middle East and
I hope the US also adopts a strategy of supporting secular
democracy in the Middle East. It is true that
secularism failed
in the Middle East in several countries in the past, but that was
secularism from above and lacked the strength of democracy whereas the current secular democracy movement
in the Middle East is a grass root movement after experiencing
IslamicKKK in power.
