Secular Democracy is not enough and Futurism is needed

Eleven years ago it was
discussed in details why secularism will determine the future of Iran rather
than just the human rights demands which was the focus of opposition in the
Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc (1). Today one does not need to argue much to show
the correctness of that analysis. But Secular Democracy is not enough and
Futurism is also needed. Why? Because Secular Democracy was the best that Industrial
Society could offer in the forms of Liberal Democracy and Social Democracy,
and actually all Communist states were built upon a challenge to Secular
Democracy by the Third International headed by Lenin, even before the 1917
Russian Revolution. What was finally the theoretical framework that challenged
World Communism at the end of 20th Century was the Futurism of Post-Industrial Society
best formulated by Daniel Bell (2), in his masterpiece: The Coming of
Post-Industrial Society. Even in Iran of today, we see leftists both
working with different factions of the Islamic regime including the Islamic
reformists, and also leftists in the Iranian secular opposition, who follow in
the footsteps of the Third International. The challenge
to what they propose cannot be offered solely by Secular Democracy and the
caveat of post-industrial futurism is needed. This is why the Iranian Secular
Democratic Party has a Futurist platform (3). Finally I need to note that the futurism of
Daniel Bell's Post-Industrial Society model, is now superseded in the 21st Century
with
the seminal work of Ray Kurzweil's Singularity (4).
