P.S. Oct 1, 2017: Announcing Change of Position to Opposing any form of Federalism for Iran: http://www.ghandchi.com/1641-etelaieh-federalism-english.htm
After Iraq's invasion of Iran on September 22, 1980, many Western powers, Israel
and Arab states thought the war will weaken Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) and
supported Saddam's attack as a way to achieve dual containment with IRI. True
that Iranian opposition basically wanted to end Islamism and achieve secular
democracy, yet at the beginning of the war, even some in the opposition hoped
the war to help their aspirations. But in reality, Iraq-Iran War only
strengthened the Islamic regime in Iran and Ayatollah Khomeini called the war
a blessing for IRI.
Today there is a similar situation with regards to separatist movements in the
border provinces of Iran. Some factions in Western governments, Israel and Arab
states think of separatism as a way to weaken and contain Islamic Republic of
Iran. Some people in the opposition also share this misguided analysis. Surely
IRI itself is the root cause of the separatist movements (1), but the result of
all this will be like the Iraq-Iran War, i.e. the IRI military will be
strengthened by continuation of such developments.
Iranian opposition will not benefit from separatist movements and our ideals of
secularism and democracy will not be served by such developments, the same way
Iraq-Iran War hurt us rather than strengthen us in our struggle for secularism
and democracy in Iran. The pro-democracy states and freedom-loving people of the
world can best help Iranian opposition by supporting a secular democratic
solution for Iran as a whole, not to help attempts to break up Iran.
Iranians have had bad memories from the times when pieces of the country,
were separated from Iran by Russian Empire about 200 years ago, by the treaties of Gulistan and Turkmenchay, and also by the experience of groups directed by
Stalin about 70 years ago to separate Azerbaijan and Kurdistan of Iran.
Separatist movements are not a shortcut to achieve freedom in Iran, they only
strengthen Islamic Republic of Iran.
Hoping for a democratic and secular futurist republic in Iran,
