Less than a month ago I discussed Marx's error in the Critique of Gotha Program and how Lenin perpetuated the mistake by propagating <Dictatorship of the Proletariat> as the path to humanity's happiness. In a way, they were both responding to Jefferson's ideal of <Pursuit of Happiness> which was written a century before them in US Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately this was a mistaken path. In fact even Jefferson's Leibnizian phrase of <Pursuit of Happiness> was replaced with John Locke's trinity of <Life, Liberty and Private Property> in the 5th and 14th amendments of US Constitution. Basically, socialism, in the sense of labor laws to protect unemployment benefits, healthcare, etc as we see in all European countries today, was pioneered by Marxists to complement modern society's progress. But obviously it is not the ultimate social justice which Marx correctly recognized after all the achievements of socialists in Europe in the labor movement. In the Critique of Gotha Program, he tried to find a quick *political* alternative for this dilemma and that is when he went wrong and proposed the <Dictatorship of the Proletariat> which ended up in the totalitarianism of later Communist States of Third International and this is how Communism distanced itself from 300 years of achievements of secular democrats in the U.S. and Europe; whereas the countries that continued on the path of socialism of Second International, did not succumb to that fate. Nonetheless, the problem Marx recognized was real and even he provided a solution to it in Grundrisse, as reminded to me by Daniel Bell where Marx sought an *economic* solution rather than a *political* solution. The latter approach based on abundance is not a quick panacea but will be a lasting solution for humanity that has been discussed in a book entitled "New Variant to Meet Human Need." Moreover, exponential growth proposed by futurist Ray Kurzweil makes it possible to provide what social democratic parties of Europe achieved without the stagnation they experienced due to impediments to creating new wealth. This option is what was discussed two years ago in an article entitled "Futurist Party Aims for What Marx Deferred to Distant Future."
