اریک هوفر در کتاب «معتقدین راستین» [منتشر شده در 1951] .. در پی ارائهء گفتاوردی از «اسقف تیهون» در کتابی از داستایوفسکی مبنی بر اینکه "لامذهبی کامل بیشتر قابل احترام است تا لاقیدی این جهانی ... لامذهب کامل یک گام از ایمان کامل فاصله دارد ... ولی فرد لاقید هیچ ایمانی ندارد بغیر از هراسی بد»، می افزاید که همهء «معتقدین راستین» عصر ما – کمونیست ها، نازی ها، فاشیست های ژاپن، و یا کاتولیک ها (...)، همگی با حرارات می گفتند، و کمونیستها هنوز هم با سخنوری ادعا می کنند، که دموکراسی غرب منحط است. دلیلشان هم این است که مردم غرب خیلی نرم و نازک، خیلی لذت طلب، و بیش از آن خودخواه هستند که بخواهند برای ملت، یا خدا، یا هر هدف مقدس دیگری خود را فدا کنند. به ما گفته می شود که این عدم آمادگی برای مردن، نشانگر فساد و پوسیدگی درونی، اخلاقی و حتی بیولوژیک است. دموکراسی ها کهنه، فاسد، و منحط هستند. آنها هیچ رقیبی برای جماعت خروشان معتقدینی که قرار است وارث کرهء ارض شوند به شمار نمی آیند...»

Eric Hoffer writes

... Dostoyevsky puts the following words in Bishop Tihon's mouth: Outright atheism is more to be respected than worldly indifference ... the complete atheist stands on the penultimate step to most perfect faith ... but the indifferent person has no faith whatever except a bad fear. All the true believers [fanatics] of our time-whether Communist, Nazi, Fascist, Japanese or Catholic-declaimed volubly (and the Communists still do) [i.e.. 1951] on the decadence of the Western democracies. The burden of their talk is that in the democracies people are too soft, too pleasure- loving and too selfish to die for a nation, a God or a holy cause. This lack of a readiness to die, we are told, is indicative of an inner rot- a moral and biological decay. The democracies are old, corrupt and decadent. They are no match for the virile
congregations of the faithful who are about to inherit the Earth
