Thirty Years' War is often misunderstood as the peak of religious wars and Medieval society itself. Nothing could be further from the truth. Thirty Years' War which happened from 1618 to 1648 in Central Europe actually marked the end of Middle Ages and religion based wars in Europe.

In fact, the major religion-based wars in Europe such as the Crusades began five centuries before the time of Thirty Years' War and continued during the Middle Ages. Whereas Thirty Years' War, even though started with religious strife of Catholics and Protestants to dominate Europe, but it soon became a European civil war, and having no real winners, ended up in religious tolerance and rise of modernization.

Thirty Years' War was a sign that modern society cannot be managed by any political religion seeking dominance and the foundations of secular states started to be formed, not by the irreligious individuals but by religious people themselves.

One wonders about a similar phenomena in the last three decades in the Middle East. Could we hope that the current religious wars in the Middle East can help us to arrive at a beyond war understanding and religious tolerance not only in the Middle East but worldwide (1).

Hoping for a democratic and secular futurist republic in Iran,
