It is strange that the rise of Islamist extremism, both Shi'a and Sunni,
continued for more than 50 years and yet the West basically failed to see the
threat from it. In contrast, the Western states were very clear about the threat
of Communism even before the Cold War and were highly focused on their own
democratic values to challenge the Communists all over the world.
Why the difference? Western countries were afraid of Communism to be picked up
by labor and student movements or other segments of their own population.
Whereas almost all the Western countries even with the current rise of Muslim
immigration cannot reach 10 percent of Muslim population, and conversion to
Islam is negligible.
In the battle with Communism, the West emphasized on its own democratic values
whereas as far as Islamism was concerned, the West even united with many
Islamist extremist groups in various countries and hardly talked about their
opposition to secular and democratic values of the West.
It is now time to understand why Islamism kills, whether in power (1) or in
opposition (2) and to make up for the huge error of the last half century of
negligence (3).
